Tower Chicken Pie Shop, I Never Had One!

Pulling into the Mars Drive-in for a Lime Rickey. Ordering up a burger from the car hop at the A&W on Blackstone. Checking out the action at Bob's Big Boy. Your favorite grilled cheese sandwich at the Woolworths Counter. Don't forget loading up at Perry Boys Smorgy. What eats do you miss?

Tower Chicken Pie Shop, I Never Had One!

Post by Lost Fresno » Thu Aug 19, 2010 7:42 am

My second apartment EVER was located at 1329 Van Ness, just one block down from Olive. It was the Tower District and there were many eateries to choose from. This was important to a guy who basically didn't cook for himself at all. After a while, I got bored with the local selections as I like a lot of variety. I kept eye balling the Chicken Pie Shop as I walked by but sometime in my childhood I had a lousy frozen one and that colored my idea as to if they tasted good or not. So I avoided the place even though it was directly next door to where I lived.

When I got desperate for something new I did give it some consideration, but then I remembered the yucky chicken pie I once had. I was in Fresno a couple of years ago with my wife and she their Chicken Pot Pie but I had a burger. It was my first time inside and I loved the chicken on the wall and the funky 2 tone green vinyl seats. Now 40 years later, I like Chicken Pot pies, I get them from Boston Market where we now live. I wish I would of given them a try when I lived next door to the place. I hear they are excellent (I heard that then too).

I had no idea until recently that Chicken Pie Shop had been in Manchester Center. Was it a 2nd location or did it move to the Tower

Hello Big J. The Chicken Pie Shop, note there is no "POT" in the name, is known officaly as Grandmarie's Chicken Pie Shop. It opened at 861 E Olive Ave in 1946 and not only is it in the orginal location but I've never heard that they ever opened any other locations. However, I have spent my adult years living elsewhere so if you know that they were in Manchester Center at one time, please confirm that.

I'll take a pic of an ad I came across, in an old Fresno Falcons program (1980) that has their address as the SW corner restaurant location of Manchester Mall. And that's the only location listed. Pic is attached

The Chicken Pie Shop had its origins in Long Beach. Roadfood.com wrote an article about the one in the Tower District:

The Pie Shop is still there, and we still make a point of hitting it when we visit good old Fresburg. The Tower location has been there forever and they briefly made a foray into a second location in Manchester, but it didn't last long. (It was at the southwest corner of the mall, I think a buffet was there most recently?) Thank heavens the original location is (or was a few months ago when we ate there) still going strong! Yelp it, baby!
They make awesome fruit and cream pies, too, and biscuits with honey, and...dang it...time for a road trip!
