This is great proof that there was another location to the Japanese Garden that was in the park before 1941. More recent maps show that island on Washington Lake as the Japanese garden, but I think the original garden was near the now closed Belmont entrance and on those lakes that are now part of the Zoo's new construction.

In the 1950's there were two lakes. One was near the carrousel and next to hwy. 99 and near Belmont...that one had the Japanese "shrine" in the center on an island. That was the one with the boat rentals too. The other lake was smaller and also had an island that was heavily wooded. The smaller lake was full of turtles, ducks, and beautiful HUGE lotus plants. I'll be posting photos of the lotus lake soon.

As kids we spent so much time going back and forth to the Kalkowski's house (behind us) that our folks removed a couple of boards in the fence to make a door for us!
