This is the brand new subdivision at the corner of North Cedar and Princeton. We're building a fort beneath that huge ugly metal power tower that sits there. At the time McLane (to the left, out of picture) was a vineyard. The gold house in the background was owned by Kal and Elaine Kalkowski. Kal was the commander of the Air National Guard Base in Fresno. Cindy's dad, Lee, was a tire dealer and owner of Heitzig and Shirkey in Fresno.

That's the vineyard in the background that McLane High replaced. The corner house was going to be owned by George and Virginia English. George worked for Southern Pacific. They had three kids: George Jr., Priscilla, and Margie.

This is the big pg&e tower near the corner of Princeton and N. Cedar...there's a little park there now.

The house is still there. It was very well-built by John Bonadelli, partly because my dad worked for the Contractor's State License Board which operated out of the Builder's Exchange in downtown Fresno. The Exchange was headed by Harry Cayford. Like most people I knew back then, he and his wife Julia are now at Belmont Memorial Park.

This is Calvin "Kal" Kalkowski. Kal became the commander of the 144th at the Fresno Air National Guard. During WWII he was in England and while at a USO event he stepped outside for a smoke with Glenn Miller. The next day Miller was killed.

I remember how fun it was to get the bridge to bounce as much as we could.

We would always save up a bag of stale bread to take to the park to feed to the ducks.

I always wanted to make it out to that island.
