Breuner's

Do you remember the Country Boys Market with its wooden floors? Walter Smiths was the place to go for clothes on the Fulton Mall. Penny Candy had great blacklight posters and don't forget Whitie's Pet Store on Blackstone. What vintage retail do you remember growing up in Fresno?

Breuner's

I remember a furniture store called Breuner's on Shaw, just west of Fresno State. I think it's a Macy's furniture annex or something now. Was Breuner's the first tenant of this property, or was there an earlier retail tenant?

That building was built for Breuners, about 1970 -71. I just got a recent view of the "forgotten zone" of this building. Macy's has occupied the showroom and there is an indoor soccer field where the furniture warehouse was. When Breuners was here, there was a grand staircase leading to the mezzanine floor of offices and meeting rooms. Now, all this area has been sectioned off as Macy's doesn't use this space. But I got to peek up there recently, and it was like stepping into a 1970's time capsule. The green shag carpet and the Breuner's wallpaper which consisted of sepia tone street scenes of the old Breuners storefront. It was pretty cool.
