Its been a long time that I even heard that name mentioned. The last final year in Palo Alto, and San Francisco about 1993 I did Engraving for them in the stores at Christmas time. If you remember Hockett-Cowan Music store on Fulton, I think I. Magnin was next door. I think Bank of America was accross the street. All of these were in business before Fulton was a mall. Funny thing is after you mentioned this, I Googled I. Magnin. All it talks about is pretty much the main stores in San Francisco. I don't know for sure but I think there was a Joseph Magnin in Fresno too. That was a son who opened his own store. Not connected to I. Magnin at all.

I remember both I. Magnin and Joseph Magnin from my six years in Southern California, 1972-78. I didn't remember either one from Fresno.

There was either a Joseph Magnin or an I. Magnin where Arte Americas is now, on Van Ness, south of Divisidero. I went in there once with my mom in the late 60s or early 70s.

I. Magnin was the on Van Ness. My mom took me there when I was 14 to get my eyebrows plucked. I loved shopping at Joseph Magnin. Its been so many years that I forgot if it was in Fashion Fair or Manchester so thank you to the poster that said it was in Manchester. I was so sad when it closed

I. Magnin located just down from the Fresno Bee building on VanNess ( Fulton ) was opened on a misreading of customer demographics. Noting that a number of upscale shoppers at the Union Square branch had Fresno County and environs addresses the company decided to open a store close to those customers. The fatal flaw in planning was that those customers ( mainly women who lunch ) used Magnin's on Union Square in San Francisco as a destination in outings to The City.

The beautiful I. Magnin store in Fresno was at Van Ness and Calaveras. The outer walls of the bldg. were originally part of the Frank. H. Short mansion. The store opened in 1955.
