Youngs Market and The Big Potato Market

~
Do you remember the Country Boys Market with its wooden floors? Walter Smiths was the place to go for clothes on the Fulton Mall. Penny Candy had great blacklight posters and don't forget Whitie's Pet Store on Blackstone. What vintage retail do you remember growing up in Fresno?

Youngs Market and The Big Potato Market

Post by oldschool » Thu Sep 19, 2013 5:00 am

Anybody remember Youngs Market at the corner of West and Shields? When I was wayyyyyy young, I remember a lady named Connie. I had a crush on her. She was a nice person. She was one of the checkers. Also The Big Potato Market. I don't remember the location maybe Maroa accross from Steven's Bike and Toys. I never understood why he Big Potato moved to Elm and Adams past Easton. Even though I lived closer to the new location, I never went there anymore.

I remember Young's, though I don't think I ever went in there. Didn't it become a video store later on? As for Big Potato, I've never heard of it.

Big Potato is still around. One of the best places to buy beef in the Fresno area. I remember Young's, and DeKor Drugs next door.

The Big Potato Market I am thinking about is on the corner of Elm and Adam’s Ave just south of Easton. Before 72 it was my families store Zahigian’s Market and George And Ed Zahigian’s before that. Grandpa Ed bought out uncle George in the 50’s. Evidently Grandpa was always concerned Vons was going to move in across the street and 50 years later it’s still the only market for miles around. They tore down the old store in the mid 90’s and replaced it with the new store that is there now. Also the old house my mom grew up in just north of there was sectioned up and moved to somewhere south of Paso Robles.
