Fresno's First Jack In The Box next to Radcliffe

How many of you went to the first drive through with a speaker system in Fresno? That would of been the Jack In The Box on Blackstone. When I first pulled through in 1970, it seemed really strange talking to the clown to give my order, but I was really hungry!

Although Jack In The Box started in San Diego in the 40's, it wasn't until 1968 when the company was sold to Ralston Purina that they started to advertise on TV and rapidly expand. The Fresno Bee ad is from 1968 and took up an entire page! This was the first push to welcome Fresno to this new drive through concept of ordering through an intercom system.

The intercom looked something like this. Pretty strange back in the day.

The photo below is not of the original Fresno store but the building looked exactly like this.

You may have seen this ad run in the Bee back in the day. Appears to me like they were trying to get Fresno folks used to ordering from that strange clown's head as they keep repeating Talk to the Clown!
