Pulling into the Mars Drive-in for a Lime Rickey. Ordering up a burger from the car hop at the A&W on Blackstone. Checking out the action at Bob's Big Boy. Your favorite grilled cheese sandwich at the Woolworths Counter. Don't forget loading up at Perry Boys Smorgy. What eats do you miss?

The Wooden Nickel sandwich shop in Calwa

Post by NettiesKid » Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:56 pm

Two places I remember well from growing up in Calwa in the late 70's, early 80's are the Wooden Nickel sandwich shop and Lucky Bun. Now the Lucky Bun is still around, but in name only. The food is nowhere near as good as it used to be back in the day and the atmosphere is definitely gone. The Wooden Nickel was great though. It was Subway before there was Subway locally. I think (I may be wrong) the Wooden Nickel used to have a cool old cigar store wooden Indian out in front.

Yep they had some good sandwiches. The luckybun has been taken over by their kids and not open all the time anymore.
