96 FM?

~
You just got home from school and it’s Channel 30 Fun Time! Or maybe Nancy Allen's Movie Matinee on Channel 24. Don’t forget the BOSS 30's #1 KYNO. If you were sophisticated, you only listened to KFIG on some new airwave called FM. We honor the late great Al Radka here at Lost Fresno whose motto was Lettuce Eat it!

Am I remembering this right? 96 FM was the radio station that played top 40 in the '80s, correct?

I remember when KYNO-FM switched its call letters to KPHD and tried to compete with the mighty K-FIG by being a tighter formatted " light" progressive rock station . Long haired, nasal voiced K-FIG DJ Ray Appleton snidely commented on air one day " who would you rather listen to, a bunch of " scholars " ? , LOL.

KFIG was a great station - originally on 94.5mHz FM from the Del Web building, and then moved to 101.1 mHz. When Applecracker got on there it went downhill fast.

Nono...96FM became 95.7 the Fox. I dont remember where B95 came from. Same neighborhood on the dial, Y94 became Kiss Country. That was an end of an era too.

KFIG was originally at 94.5 and their studios were located on Alluvial Avenue in Clovis. When they switched to Album Rock and became very successful, they moved into the Del Webb building and relocated their transmitter on top of Del Webb. They had to switch to 101.1 because of technical problems. KYNO-FM went through many music formats. They went to Album Rock as KPHD to steal Fig listeners. KFIG was hurting 13/KYNO so it was a move to dilute the KFIG audience ratings and keep KYNO-AM as a top rated station.

Rock 96 was originally KPHD for a short time when the station flipped from country to the album rock format. We launched at 6pm on a Sunday night with Stairway to Heaven and flipped the call letters to KYNO-FM shortly thereafter. The station was testing a new format for Drake Chennault, the syndicated arm of the legendary Bill Drake.
