KIRV Radio AM 1510

~
You just got home from school and it’s Channel 30 Fun Time! Or maybe Nancy Allen's Movie Matinee on Channel 24. Don’t forget the BOSS 30's #1 KYNO. If you were sophisticated, you only listened to KFIG on some new airwave called FM. We honor the late great Al Radka here at Lost Fresno whose motto was Lettuce Eat it!

KIRV Radio AM 1510

Post by oldschool » Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:04 am

Do any of you in the late 1960's remember KIRV 1510 AM. You know they used to print color posters with
the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, and the Grateful Dead and a popular playlist of the songs and artist. Disc
Jockies like Sam Schwann, Roger Pro, and I believe Dick Dragovon. They were ahead of the times. All
the contest too. I remember I won a Sgt. Pepper album and was on the air. Roger Pro ask me, who
would you like to feed to the Yum-Yum tree?????? When you said a name they made a weird monster sound.
Now AM and FM radio is boring. Anyone remember this or other popular stations that were short lived?

Hey ‘old school’, I worked briefly at KIRV 1510. Roger Pro was the Program Director. The other jocks were Phil Lewis and Big Mike G. Larry Gamble replaced Roger, Phil went on to work at KYNO, and Mike went to L.A. to work in television.
Cream, Blood Sweat & Tears, Janis Joplin, Country Joe and the Fish, and many others were on the playlist. Yes, the station was far ahead of it’s time and a trip to work there. Kowabunga!

KIRV was really big during the "Summer of Love" (1967). I moved away at the end of the summer and don't remember KIRV being on the air the times I visited Fresno subsequently. If I remember correctly, KIRV's big problem was that it was a daytime-only station. During the summer that meant sign-off at 9 pm or so, but in the winter the sign-off time would have been about 5 pm, which would make it hard to build a following or---most importantly---sell advertising.

The one thing I remember from KIRV was....CHICKEN MAN!!! ("He's Everywhere! He's Everywhere!")

I have a Beatles and Doors handbill playlist. I used a long wire antenna to listen at night in Iowa.

Yep - remember taking a tour of KIRV in 1964 or '65 when I was at "Fresno State". In an old Victorian house in SW Fresno - out of town a bit, as I recall.

In Iowa, at night? KIRV signed off the air at sundown then, and still does today.
