Street Map of Fresno in 1960 - Find your house!

Post by Lost Fresno » Sun Apr 15, 2018 11:31 am

We took a street map of Fresno in 1960 and scanned it so those of us that need our memories refreshed, could better find old hangouts, restaurants and maybe even where your house was located. We simplified the map to only include Barstow Ave. to the North, California Ave. to the south, Peach Ave to the West and Marks Ave. to the East.

This was after all, the known Universe of Fresno for many years. Long before the major expansion of the North/East ~ Clovis area and the incredible growth of Northern Fresno starting at Shaw. In the 1950's we saw major housing tracks develop in the North Fresno (Cedar & Ashlan) and the exodus from the downtown. However, for the majority of the years that old Fresno was thriving, this central area depicted on our map was where it all happened.

Or map is divided into 4 grids with McKinley Ave. dividing the North and South and North Fresno Street the East and West. In the four posts below you, will find a high resolution enlargement for each of our zones. Investigate your Lost Fresno!

Next is Zone 2 on our map. Again, Barstow is the most Northern edge and McKinley Street is once more the southern boarder of this map section.

North Fresno is the Western most section and we see out to Peach at the East.

Here is Zone 3 on our 1960 map. We find McKinley St to the North but include all the way south to Church Ave. This time we include Hughes Ave. at the western edge and again, we stop at North Fresno Street at the eastern edge.

The Zone 4 map covers Mckinley St. to the North and down to California Street at the South.

North Fresno Street is at the western edge and we look out to Peach Ave on the Eastern edge.

Thank you for posting these very old maps. So nice to see one where Hwy 168 isn't cutting through central Fresno to connect Clovis. I know people love how easy it is now to get from northeast Fresno and go downtown or get on Hwy 99 but that freeway destroyed so many long time Fresnian's homes back in the early 1970's. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my girlfriend and she said "we have to move soon". I was so surprised when she said the county had bought her home to put a new freeway in. I had not heard a word about it coming.

Lots of street maps from the 1960s and 70s on eBay if anyone has an interest.
