Marimba Band at Roosevelt High 1976-78

The Marimba band at Roosevelt High School (headed by Ms. Fenton) was an easy way to get laughed at, for the show costumes, the bright red bow ties, the double bell bottom pants and that lipstick kiss on the cheek that Fenton gave, before sending us out onto the stage of the "Big Show" held every year in the School auditorium. But we were invincible and the "show" was greater than the unimportant chirps of a few hecklers. We got paid for vacation gigs (at least the school did) in Hotels in San Diego, where we played the "Enchilada Buffets" in the high end restaurants and hotel cafeteria's and we ran about the beach, pinching ourselves, that we were Fresno kids, poor, never having left Fresno, but with Marimba Band, we were Latin Music Stars.

All year we worked for the Big Show, where parents, teachers, family members, came out to cheer us on, while we dished out Latin tunes, Marimba, tropical and folk dance songs. I will always remember Ms. Fenton, she loved us like her own and taught us how to be confident, how to put on our best performance. This was a life lesson, more so than any geometry book, or history book. It was how we presented ourselves, ultimately. In those hot Fresno days, windows open in that classroom that faced Cedar Streets, we sweated ourselves into confident performers and made beautiful memories that would last a lifetime.
