This was my brother's kinder graduation at St. Helen's Elementary School on Belmont Ave. in 1956. The school was pretty new back then. We had old rows of desks on cast iron runners that actually had ink wells in them. The classes were hotter than hell a lot of the time. Mary Schwartz, the teacher in this picture, died of cancer not long after this photo was taken. My mother then took over as Kindergarten teacher...WITH 56 KIDS IN THE CLASS!

I always loved the Fresno Zoo. Looking at these 60 year-old photos I guess my memories were correct. It was a really nice place!

There was no better place for a picnic than Roeding Park...I hope it's still the same way now.

When we were growing up on South Lily Ave. on the West Side, Charley Purcell was our best friend. His folks, Pat and Andy, were wonderful people. We kept in touch over the years...Charley was killed in Vietnam. I remember going to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. and touching his name on the stone panel.
