Underground Gardens

Post by kristincre8s » Mon Jan 16, 2012 1:11 pm

Anyone remember the old Underground Gardens out at the end of Shaw by the old Levitz Furniture? We had at least a couple of school field trips there. I still have vivid images in my head of the hallways and the Grand Ballroom. That was an amazing place. I also remember the Lesterburger hovercraft ride that they had out in the parking lot for awhile. LOVED those deep fried burritos!

I grew up not to far from there and I never visited the place.Back in the 60's there was Levitz furniture and fig orchards out there. I can't remember what was in Highway City, it had a feel of something like the 30's or 40's in that little area. And further on down at Herndon and 99 there was this tall missile, don't remember what it advertised.

The "missle" around Herndon advertised a gas station. The thing was some sort of petroleum storage tank painted to look like a rocket. It said: "U.S. ARMY/PIONEERS IN SPACE.'

Drove by this sign at least 500 times but only visited the attraction once! How about you?

Spent a wonderful few hours at the Underground Gardens. Highly recommend a return visit even if you've been before! Tell 'em Lost Fresno sent you.

My grandfather took me to see the Underground Gardens when I was perhaps 5 years old. (He was fond of visiting unusual and/or new Fresno sights.)No less a luminary than the great writer T.C. Boyle made the creation of the Gardens the subject of a short story originally published in the New Yorker magazine. You can read it as part of the short story collection "After the Plague"(published 2001).
