Hey buddy my mom work there at the same time , she was a waitress named Rose or Rosa. I used to walk over from elementary school and Danny or his son would always get me a coke or sundae or my mom would.

Yeah a happening corner, had Swiss Chalet Bakery, The Red Freezer, Country Boy Market and Longs Drugs across the street, Me & Eds and a Winchells on another corner and a couple of gas stations and other restaurants. The Swiss Chalet Bakery was the best bakery ever.

The Outpost, remember it well. I worked there as a busboy in 63 & 64. At that time Dan and Betty vukson was in partners with Pete and Ruby Teressi. We very seldom seen Pete or Ruby, but Dan and Betty were there every day working.

They were great to work for, I well never forget one evening when I was off, I brought my girlfriend to meet dan in the kitchen after a few words he threw me the keys to his new corvette and said take her for a ride, I was barely 16, he was like that, just a great guy. By the way I married that girl before graduating High School in 65. Almost 51 years ago.

Thanks for the memories
Mike

The Outpost at Chestnut & Olive

I remember the Outpost. My High School sweetherts mother took us both there for dinner. The food was excelent! Except the lobster, never liked lobster (my sweethert loved lobster!). This was back in the mid 70's and it was very expensive (for a guy just out of high school!)! It was closed and torn down so the hwy. 180 could go thru. A shame really.

Ya, the Outpost was a great restaraunt! It closed in the 1990's if I remember correctly. The Me n Eds was one of their better ones also. That was a vibrant corner back in the day. Pretty sad now though...

I remember seeing the Outpost sign now, though I never ate there. When did it go out of business? Name seems similar to Outback, though I suspect the Outpost was there first.

The restaurant name was The Outpost. It was owned by Dan Vukson. The liquor store next door also sold hand guns in the sixties. Before Winchells there was a little market that, if I remember right, had an electric train in the window during the Christmas season. The Shell station was owned by a man named Bob, can't remember his last name, and I handed out flyers in the surrounding neighborhood for it's grand opening. Can't remember all the stores in C&O shopping center but remember it was next to Weathermaker homes that had some of the most confusing, for me at least, street layouts.

Does anyone remember when the bridge was built over the Mckinley canal and Chestnut went through to Dakota Ave.? Prior to that you would have to turn left at the canal and cross ,I believe, at Dearing. Speaking of that area does anyone remember Telco? They had a slot car drag strip with pillows at the end so your car wouldn't crackup.

The Outpost was definitely on Chestnut and Olive. I took my date there on prom night 1980. They were different in the restaurant business in Fresno in that they closed every year for the month of October. They refused to compete with the Fair. Smart!
