I remember riding the streetcars many a time, first with my mother and then on my own. I got on board on Wishon Ave. which changed to Fulton Street, and that took me downtown. The fare was 7 cents which I dropped in a box next to the conductor.
The story goes that when the tracks were removed in the late 1930's, they were sold to Japan, which returned them in another form during WWII.
