I actually own the original Roeding park train , the rotary Chief from 1955. I would post pictures here but it’s too complicated. I’m looking for information on the train. When was it taken out of service and gotten rid of? Where did it go when it left Fresno? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

When i was a kid, the train was almost always broken. The baskets were alot of fun though

My husband was one of the engineers in high school during summer vacation - probably about 1959. He remembers it was 10 cents to ride & yes, there was a tunnel.

No, I don't think it's still there. The Southern Pacific steam loco is still there but I don't think the boxcar is.

Also n Roeding Park in addition to the train display was an old boxcar with the numbers "40 and 8" stenciled on the side. This was in honor of the Fresno men who served in World War 1, and there was a sign indicating the name of the regiment or honor society which had donated the boxcar. The term 40 and 8 meant the boxcar could hold 40 men and 8 horses. The French military called this designation the old Quarante et Huit, which is French for....40 and 8. My kids loved to climb around the couplers and pretend they were going somewhere chuffa-chuffa. Is the old boxcar still there?

Take a ride on the train! There's no admission fee for playing this video.

Here is a map of Roeding Park dated 1964. I can see the miniature train tracks at the lower left. Although I grew up in Fresno in the 50s and 60s and went to Roeding a hundred times, I never had the honor of riding that train!

Why yes, I think it did. I only rode it once, seems like a million years ago now.

Didn't the rideable train go through a tunnel?
